Founder Renee Sheetz Davies is a Board Member of the San Diego Bowl
Game Association (SDBGA) which presents the annual Holiday and Poinsettia
College Bowl games in San Diego. The San Diego Bowl Game Association is a
non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of the two bowl games is to create
tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens
by producing the nation's most exciting bowl games and festivals of events.
The Holiday Bowl initially was conceived to annually feature the Western Athletic
Conference champion against a nationally-ranked opponent. After the breakup
of the WAC in 1997, the Holiday Bowl signed agreements with the Pac-10 and
Big 12 conferences. Currently, the third selection from the Pac-10 serves as the
game's anchor team to oppose the fifth selection from the Big 12. In its 32-year
history, the Holiday Bowl has generated over $500 million in economic impact.
The 2009 game brought 43,944 visitors to San Diego who filled 43,951 San
Diego hotel room nights and contributed $40.7 million to the local economy. San
Diego based Bridgepoint Education is the current title sponsor for the Holiday
Bowl. Bridgepoint Education selected Promises 2Kids as the Bowl's San Diego
community charitable recipient.
The Poinsettia Bowl was developed to continue to support the SDBGA's efforts
to increase economic benefits to San Diego. The first game was played between
the Naval Academy and Colorado State University in 2005. The 2009 San Diego
County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl generated an economic impact of $10.59
million for the San Diego area. Direct visitor spending totaled $5.49 million, while
$5.1 million was derived from indirect spending. Total attendance was 32,665.
SDCCU selected Make-A-Wish Foundation as the Bow's San Diego community
charitable recipient.
